Chapter Eleven

The bra was a little uncomfortable, that's why she could feel it acutely on their walk to The Creamery and not because Arden had handed it to her, had selected it, knew she was wearing it. Nope, definitely didn't have anything to do with that.

“Are you ok?” Arden set down a white ceramic mug in front of her, a thin layer of foam on its surface.

“Yeah, yup, definitely. Everything's fine. Why do you ask?” Reese wrapped her hands around the mug to have something to do with them but withdrew them immediately as the hot mug burned her fingers. What was with this day? Coffee is not supposed to be the enemy.

“It's just… nothing. I wanted to talk to you about something, not try to make you share things with me.”

“Ok, should I be nervous? Did I lose the job?”

“What? No, it’s nothing like. You're doing great, even if you do get a bit twangy unexpectedly.” Arden's eyes twinkled

“I do no such thing,” Reese drawled in her best old western.

“Thanks for showing me it's not as bad as it could be.” Arden laughed.

Reese pointed a finger at Arden. “Hey, I’m at this fancy coffee shop at an ungodly hour of my own free will. How about we save criticisms of my voice for the end?”

The coffee shop was mostly deserted, not much call for early coffee on the weekends. It was quaint, with little mismatched tables dotting the floor. Nothing like the intimidating café of the salad incident. Reese was grateful for the open tables around them and the acoustic music coming from the speakers. It was just the right amount of noise. She felt comfortable enough to have a conversation without being overheard but she wasn’t overwhelmed by the crush of noise most places usually carry.

Maybe she should try finding a coffee shop like this back home. It would be nice to have someone else make her coffee sometime.

Arden shifted in her chair like the legs were uneven and she couldn’t find her balance.

“I appreciate you coming. Even though you’re only here because I unexpectedly showed up at your hotel room and ruined your morning and your outfit. I'm so sorry about that by the way I just—”

“It's probably better to just say what you need to say. I mean you can apologize to me all day, both for spilling coffee on my favorite sweater and for selecting a bra that was sure to show through this white shirt I'm wearing.” Arden's face went as red as Reese's bra and she felt a little smug about it. She maturely took a sip of her coffee to keep from gloating. “And I suppose I can apologize all day for putting you in an awkward situation yesterday. Maybe we just call a truce and go back to being colleagues.”

“No, that’s not what I—look I'm a little nervous. I haven't said this to many people who aren't like...me.”

Reese could feel the anxiousness rolling off of Arden like fog. She was picking at one of her nails, chipping the black polish off like she was sculpting marble.
